 How-to-Scan-On-Demand?

This how-to procedure addresses the issue of scanning user's desktop with no fixed schedule.

Scenario: Scanning user's desktop who does not have a fixed working schedule is problematic since their desktop is either powered-off or notebook is unplugged at the time the regular scan is scheduled. This how-to procedure solves this situation by using two products namely: GFI Network Server Monitor and GFI LANguard Network Security Scanner.

Here is how to accomplish "Scan-on-Demand".

  1. Create a batch file using the LANguard NSS command-line options. Take note of the /Report and /Output location. If they are omitted, you will not receive any reports or outputs.

  2. Create a rule to monitor online/offline status of the target machine.

  3. Configure the action to execute the command file to trigger the NSS scan on the target.

  4. Ensure that the "No reboot/restart after failure" is disabled.

  5. Disable all network/email notifications as they are not necessary, except if you need to be alerted that the scan is taking place.

  6. Disable all SMS notifications as they are not necessary, except if you need to be alerted that the scan is taking place. Note that this could amount to significant costs if you are scanning alot of targets.

  7. Set the trigger to "Only once after failure".

  8. You will see the following screen when the NSS scan is triggered.
