New Features in GFI MailEssentials 10?

Date: June 2004

  1. The Bayesian filter now automatically truncates the BSP file and removes useless tokens, reducing the size of the BSP file.

  2. GFI MailEssentials can now automatically check for an update to the spam profile database, and if there is an update, it automatically downloads it.
  3. Users can now add mails to the blacklist or whitelist by dragging and dropping a mail to a set of public folders.
  4. This now makes it much easier for a user to whitelist, for example, a newsletter.
  5. The Bayesian filter can now be tuned easily by administrators and users – mail wrongly identified as spam, or spam that has not been caught, can be dragged to the appropriate public folder.
  6. GFI MailEssentials picks up the mail and trains the Bayesian filter with it.
  7. The blacklist feature has been moved to its own node and now has its own set of actions.
  8. A new action has been added which allows mail to be sent to the junk mail folder (requires Exchange 2003).
  9. Whitelisting of emails by keyword: It is possible to specify keywords, which if found in body or subject, will cause the mail to skip the anti-spam modules.
  10. A new header check has been added that looks for encoded IP addresses, which indicate that the mail server is of a spammer.
  11. A list server has been added to the product.
  12. A list server is the best method for distributing company newsletters, as it automates the process of allowing users to subscribe and unsubscribe (required by anti-spam regulations).
  13. However, to date, list servers have been expensive and difficult to administer and they did not integrate with Exchange Server.
  14. GFI MailEssentials integrates with Exchange and can use Microsoft Access or Microsoft SQL Server as the backend.
  15. Both newsletter lists and discussion lists are supported.
  16. The mail archiving feature can now directly archive to MDB, MSDE and MS SQL Server databases.
  17. It can also archive attachments.
  18. The mail archive database can be searched via a web page.
  19. Access to the web page can be controlled and the search enables the retrieval of single emails as well as of entire threads.
  20. The reporter has been upgraded: There is no need to import text log files any longer.
  21. The logs are written directly to the database and the reports can be generated immediately, making the reporter easier and faster to use.
  22. GFI MailEssentials can check for product updates at set intervals, and if a patch or new build is available, it will email the administrator and give download information.
